Profile
Websites & Design ... A 2008 graduate of the Grand Valley State University Honors College with a B.A. in Classical Languages, I am a vibrant, ambitious individual, a self-starter with a passion for learning, experiencing, and accomplishing things. I am currently employed by Atomic Object, a Grand Rapids-based software development company that designs and builds world-class software products for all sorts of clients. Previously I was a member of the Web Team at Grand Valley State University, where I did design and programming. Before that, I worked for almost two years as the Website Coordinator at The Acton Institute, a think tank in downtown Grand Rapids. I have 10 years of experience in the field of website and graphic design, including a four-year period as a Student Website Designer on the Webteam at GVSU. During that time I had the opportunity to work under accomplished mentors and learn about standards-compliant website development, extensible programming practices, and modern website design. I have maintained my own freelance studio for 8 years, taking on clients as time permitted within my busy schedule as student, violin teacher, farmer, and now full-time employee.
Photography ... I love taking beautiful pictures. I've always been the girl who takes a camera everywhere and makes everybody stop and smile. People often roll their eyes at me, but they're always happy later, when they see the pictures and remember what fun we had. For me, photography is a way of seeing the world and appreciating the beautiful people and animals and things all around me.
As a hobby, I do sessions for families, seniors, and the occasional wedding. I like to keep sessions relaxed and genuine, and I don't rush. When you book a session with me, I keep shooting until you're tired of smiling, or we run out of light (whichever comes first!) My rates are affordable...contact me for more info.
Why Classics?
The ancient philosopher Socrates famously said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." It is my firm belief that the study of Classics is valuable not only for pursuing an examined life but also for providing me with the skills needed to excel in the workplace of today's rapidly changing business climate. My education has endowed me with valuable critical thinking skills, the ability to problem-solve and construe meaning from difficult or abstract situations, above average writing and analytical skills, and the ability to produce excellent work under pressure. I feel that my degree, while unorthodox, has helped me become a very well-rounded and articulate individual, able to thrive and adapt in the workplace.
What I Use
My personal computer is an Apple MacBookPro. It comes everywhere with me. For graphics, I use Adobe Photoshop. For development, I hand-code pages using Coda by Panic Software.
